Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet undercut iPad but come with trade-offs

The iPad, the heavyweight champ of the tablet world, has summarily knocked out every challenger it has faced since it debuted last year.

The defeated include tablets with names including Xoom, PlayBook, TouchPad, G-Slate and Streak, none of which has grabbed more than a tiny sliver of the $10-billion tablet market over which the iPad reigns.

But now a pair of new lighter-weight contenders are aiming to hit Apple Inc. where it hurts: the price tag.

Amazon.com Inc.'s $199 Kindle Fire and the $249 Nook Tablet from Barnes & Noble Inc. retail for less than half the cost of the lowest-priced iPad and are undercutting the prices of nearly every brand-name tablet on the market. If the companies are successful, analysts say, they may be able to put the devices in the hands of millions who have felt that $500 was too much to spend on a tablet.

"These two companies are going to start proving that there's a media tablet market, not just an iPad market," said Tom Mainelli, a mobile device analyst at research firm IDC. "Now that some of these devices cost $200, it really throws it open to the mainstream."

But the lower cost of these devices comes with a series of trade-offs. The Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet have smaller screens ? only 7 inches compared with the iPad's more spacious 10 inches ? and their speed and handling are more like an economy sedan than the high-performance sports car feel of the iPad. Their batteries don't last as long as the iPad's, they have no option for cellular connections, and the catalog of applications they support is substantially smaller than Apple's.

It bears remembering, in fact, that the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet are descended from slower electronic readers ? simple devices that do little more than display the text of books that users download from an online store. In that sense, the tablets improve on earlier e-readers, adding access to the Internet and social networks and the ability to listen to music, watch online videos from Netflix and Hulu and send email.

"For users looking to simply read books, watch movies, listen to music and play the occasional game, the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet are perfect candidates that will not create a big dent in their pockets," said Walter Galan, an analyst at San Luis Obispo-based iFixit. "But for those looking for a full-fledged tablet, the iPad is probably a better choice in the long run."

If you're considering a tablet, then, it's a simple cost-benefit analysis: Do you need all the fancy features and screen real estate of the more expensive iPad, or can you get by with a smaller, slightly slower tablet with a palette of more basic functions, and pocket the difference?

What is Demi Lovato Thankful For?

Last year at this time, Demi Lovato was in treatment for a number of personal issues.

Therefore, following a 2011 that has seen the singer re-establish herself professionally and recover personally, Lovato has plenty to be thankful for this holiday season.

A Kiss from Demi Lovato

"I could not have done this without God and the amazing support from my family," Demi writes in her monthly Seventeen column. "They have stuck by me through everything and love me just the way that I am. That is a wonderful feeling to know that people accept the real you."

Lovato is currently on tour, promoting the album "Unbreakable" (watch her rendition of "Moves Like Jagger" HERE!), and says she's "thankful for my life path, including the highs and the lows, because it has caused my true self to shine through," adding:

"Going to treatment was a gift and I believe it saved my life. I learned how to be strong and healthy even through struggles. It also helped me open up about my issues and share them with others. Knowing that my family, friends and fans accept me for who I am is the greatest feeling ever!"

Amen, Demi. We wish you continued health and happiness.

Motives of foreign student recruiters questioned (AP)

COLUMBIA, Mo. ? As American universities welcome ever-greater numbers of international students, some professors and admissions counselors are questioning the motives of the very professionals who have helped attract so many foreign scholars to their campuses.

Higher education recruiters are under fire from detractors who say they put profit ahead of students' best interests. Critics accuse them of sending thousands of unqualified applicants to the U.S. every year, sometimes allowing students to skip basic English tests and falsify applications to make a quick commission.

"The student is best served by having the widest range of information available about what might be the best fit," said Peggy Blumenthal, an executive vice president at the not-for-profit Institute of International Education, which monitors and promotes study abroad programs. Recruiting agents "have a very large incentive to deliver a student who may not be the best fit."

A leading group of admissions counselors even proposed an outright ban on the use of international recruiters who are paid based on the number of students they lure to the United States.

College administrators who rely on recruiters are quick to defend them, saying they are more familiar with overseas customs and school systems.

By using recruiters, Missouri State University leaders "can focus on developing and delivering curriculum instead of going out and recruiting students and developing individual sponsors," said David Meinert, associate dean of the university's business school. Recruiters are "able to deliver as an intermediary something that we would have trouble delivering."

Those efforts have contributed significantly to a sharp spike in the number of foreign students seeking an American education. A recent report by Blumenthal's institute showed a 32 percent increase in the number of international students in the U.S. compared with a decade ago. Nearly a quarter of the students here for the 2010-11 academic year came from China. Many others hailed from India and South Korea.

When Missouri State's Springfield campus decided in 2007 to create an executive M.B.A. program for visiting Chinese students, the school realized it needed a recruiter steeped in that country's language, culture and educational practices.

The university hired the International Management Education Center in Hong Kong under a deal that paid recruiters $10,000 to $12,000 for each graduate student. The school kept the balance of student payments ranging from $15,000 to $22,000.

But some professors question the program's academic rigor, noting participants do not take the English proficiency tests usually required of international students and frequently show up unprepared. When the same doubts that arose in Missouri spread to China, some student sponsors ? a term that refers to local governments, schools corporations and other Chinese institutions ? said they wanted to withdraw from the program.

Earlier this year, the National Association for College Admission Counseling proposed the ban on the use of some international recruiters out of concern that unscrupulous agents were exaggerating students' English skills and submitting falsified applications in search of a fast financial reward.

Those practices introduce "an incentive for recruiters to ignore the student interest" and invite "complications involving misrepresentation, conflict of interest and fraud," the organization's board said in a May statement.

By July, the group had backed away from the ban, acknowledging a "lack of alternatives" for dispensing information about American higher education in many parts of the world. It plans to study the issue for up to two years.

Serving international students has become big business on campuses struggling with budget cuts. At public schools, foreign students pay pricey out-of-state tuition, and many who attend private institutions receive little to no financial aid.

The report by Blumenthal's group and the U.S. State Department says international students inject $21 billion into the American economy, including money spent on tuition, living expenses and accompanying family members.

Some schools eschew hiring recruiters in favor of building close relationships with international schools in targeted countries.

At Missouri State, Meinert said, the school's partner does not work directly with students or their families. Instead, it seeks deals with sponsors who then steer groups of students toward the program ? and continue to offer support after enrollment.

"We're not looking to find an individual, to go hunting for one student at a time," Meinert said. "An agent's relationship with a student ends when they get a check."

Cheating on American college applications is rampant in China, according to Tom Melcher, chairman of Zinch China, a Beijing-based consulting company that works with U.S. universities.

The company surveyed 250 high school seniors and determined that 90 percent of Chinese undergraduate applicants submit phony recommendation letters, 70 percent rely on essays written by others and 50 percent falsify their transcripts.

Melcher attributes the acceptance of cheating in part to "aggressive agents" who typically charge parents $6,000 to $10,000 ? and similar-sized bonuses if the student gains admission to a top-ranked school. Those payments do not include fees that agents charge schools, which can be more than 10 percent of tuition.

"Until and unless American schools systematically address cheating on applications from China, the problem will continue to grow," the company report said.

The recruiting industry says it's working to tighten oversight of agents. Supporters liken recruiters to the private admissions counselors used by affluent families to help American students get into the most selective schools. Not long ago, those services were also considered the bane of higher education by opponents who felt that admissions decisions were best kept away from anyone seeking a personal profit.

At Westminster College, a private liberal arts school in the central Missouri town of Fulton, international enrollment has grown from 3 percent less than a decade ago to more than 16 percent.

Most of those students are drawn from an organization called United World Colleges and an ample private scholarship fund. Previous efforts to use recruiters made little difference.

"There are very good recruiters out there who are very solid and do all the right things," said George Wolf, the school's vice president of enrollment management. "And then there are recruiters out there just to a make a buck."

A woman was shot dead at a hospital in Chicago late Thursday and a manhunt was launched to find the shooter, authorities told the Chicago Tribune.

An ambulance was not able to reach the wounded woman, who was shot in a parking garage at the University of Illinois at Chicago?Medical Center shortly before midnight, because the area was still dangerous, Chicago Fire Department?spokesman Larry Langford told the paper.?She later died.

Even though the suspect was not located, the hospital resumed normal operations at about 5 a.m. local time (6 a.m. ET), according to The Associated Press.

Republican field crowded and likely to remain so (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? They are barely blips in presidential polls and their campaign cash is scarce. Some are running on empty, fueled mainly by the exposure that comes with the blizzard of televised debates and interviews they eagerly grant to skeptical reporters.

Yet the second-tier candidates for the Republican presidential nomination soldier on. They argue that the race is far from over and that anything can happen with polls showing a wide-open race in Iowa five weeks before the Jan. 3 caucuses.

More than energy and determination, also-ran candidates like Rick Santorum and Michele Bachmann rely on particular issues, free media and prospects for the future to drive them to keep their small-scale operations going.

Santorum, Bachmann and others are likely to remain in the race until voters have their say.

Top Guatemala prosecutor warns on war crimes cases (Reuters)

GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) ? Military officials accused of atrocities during Guatemala's civil war must be brought to justice to ensure that such crimes are not repeated, the country's attorney general said on Wednesday.

Retired army general Otto Perez, who swept to power in the November 6 presidential elections, will be the first military man to govern the Central American nation since decades of army-led dictatorships ended in 1986.

Perez, who commanded troops during the bloody 1960-1996 conflict, assumes power just as the attorney general's office is beginning to charge high ranking military officials for war crimes. He takes office in January.

"We owe an enormous debt to all the victims of the war and if there is no justice, these crimes could be repeated," Attorney General Claudia Paz y Paz told Reuters on Wednesday.

Around 250,000 people, mostly ethnic Maya, were killed or disappeared during the conflict. A United Nations truth commission found that 93 percent of wartime human rights violations were committed by the armed forces.

Perez, a retired general, is under pressure to allow genocide cases against his former superiors to continue.

"We want it to be clear that you can't use terror as a control mechanism," Paz y Paz said.

Perez was elected after pledging to root out gang violence and Mexican drug cartels that are ravaging Guatemala, which now has one of the highest homicide rates in the world.

In May, the powerful Zetas Mexican cartel beheaded 27 farm workers over a dispute with the farm's owner in one of the worst massacres since the end of the civil war.

Paz y Paz worried that budgetary constraints could interfere with Guatemala's efforts to uphold justice.

"Guatemala has made important advances in the fight against organized crime ... but we are never completely prepared because we don't have sufficient resources," Paz y Paz said.

Helicopter crashes installing Christmas tree in NZ (AP)

AUCKLAND, New Zealand ? A helicopter helping install a Christmas tree on Auckland's waterfront crashes in dramatic fashion, but the pilot escapes serious injury.

Footage captured by Television New Zealand Wednesday morning shows the pilot slowly descending from about 25 feet (8 meters) when the chopper's blades appear to get caught in cables attached to scaffolding. The rear of the helicopter snaps and the pilot is tossed about as the helicopter smashes into the ground.

The television station reports that pilot Greg Gribble, who has 20 years experience, says he's "doing fine" after his ordeal.

New "Twilight" film takes $283.5 million global bite (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? The new "Twilight" vampire movie opened with a massive $283.5 million in worldwide ticket sales over the weekend as passionate fans filled theaters for the beginning of a two-part finale for the hugely popular supernatural love story.

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 1" captured an estimated $139.5 million in the United States and Canada, distributor Summit Entertainment said on Sunday. That ranked as the fifth biggest domestic opening of all time.

The movie's performance beat studio forecasts for the film, which shows young lovestruck human Bella wedding vampire Edward and becoming pregnant. Summit had predicted as much as $125 million domestically while other box-office analysts had estimated $140 million.

Internationally, "Breaking Dawn" added $144 million in 54 countries over the weekend.

The movie cost about $110 million to make.

The domestic opening ranked as the year's second-highest, behind only the "Harry Potter" finale over the summer. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2" pulled in a record $169 million during its debut weekend in July.

But "Breaking Dawn," the fourth movie in the series, failed to top the previous domestic opening-weekend record for a "Twilight" film. "New Moon" debuted to $142.8 million in 2009.

Eighty percent of the film's audience was female, the core fan base for the story based on novels from Stephanie Meyer. Diehard fans of the books have embraced the screen adaptations including the latest movie, said Richie Fay, Summit's president of domestic distribution.

"We delivered to the audience ... exactly what they wanted to see," Fay said. He said the movie's success "bodes well for Breaking Dawn - Part 2," which hits theaters in 2012.

"Breaking Dawn" brought in an average of $34,351 at more than 4,000 screens in North America (U.S. and Canada) from midnight showings early on Friday through Sunday.

The "Twilight" series is one of Hollywood's most lucrative franchises. To date, the franchise has rung up more than $2 billion from box offices worldwide, according to Hollywood.com Box Office.

The series stars Kristen Stewart as human Bella Swan and Robert Pattinson as her blood-sucking vampire love, Edward Cullen. Taylor Lautner plays Jacob Black, a werewolf who competes for Bella's affection.

Critics generally disliked "Breaking Dawn," with just 27 percent giving a favorable review on aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences were far more upbeat, scoring the movie a B+ on average, according to survey firm CinemaScore. Females gave the movie an A-.

'TWILIGHT' ECLIPSES OTHER FILMS

The "Twilight" phenomenon overshadowed all other movies over the weekend. Dancing penguin sequel "Happy Feet Two" earned $22.0 million, below studio forecasts for the 3D animated film.

"It was a very difficult weekend. Twilight certainly controlled the marketplace, especially the female audience," said Dan Fellman, head of domestic distribution for Warner Bros. Fellman said he had hoped for an opening around $30 million but expected the movie would gain ground during next week's Thanksgiving holiday and throughout the holiday season.

Action movie "Immortals," last weekend's box-office leader, finished in third place with $12.3 million. Comedy "Jack and Jill," starring Adam Sandler playing a brother and sister, earned $12.0 million to take fourth place for the weekend.

Fifth place belonged to animated family movie "Puss in Boots," a spinoff from the blockbuster "Shrek" series. "Puss" pulled in $10.7 million domestically over the weekend.

Also this weekend, "The Descendants" starring George Clooney as a father reconnecting with his daughters opened in a small number of theaters. Touted as an Oscar contender, the film brought in $1.2 million from 29 locations, or $42,150 per theater. Distributor Fox Searchlight, a unit of News Corp, will bring the movie to more than 400 theaters next weekend.

"Breaking Dawn" was released by independent studio Summit Entertainment. Time Warner Inc unit Warner Bros. released "Happy Feet Two." Privately held Relativity Media released "Immortals." "Puss in Boots" was produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom.

Acer Lets Slip New Tegra 3 Tablet With 1920?1200 screen

acer2I've been a big proponent of the idea that Apple will be putting out a high-resolution iPad soon. But it looks like they're getting beat to the punch by Acer and perhaps others, according to some scraps of information gleaned from an XML file from Acer's website. The A700 and A701, found by Notebook Italia, were listed on Acer's support site, and the listing is in fact still there as of this writing. The main features are NVIDIA's Tegra 3 chipset and an impressive 1920x1200 display resolution. That is in fact the resolution of the 24" display I'm typing this on right now.

The Anti-Mouse

Buffenstein pulls a Damaraland mole rat out of its cage so we can give it a closer look. There were mole rats on the farm in Zimbabwe where she grew up?"pests, as my father would call them"?but she didn't give them much thought until, as an undergraduate, she started collecting them in Kenya for research. Her post-doctoral work on bats, lizards, and kangaroos took her to Australia; at one point she rescued a baby 'roo from a fur trapper and carried it around for a while in her handbag. Even now, as a tenured professor at the University of Texas, Buffenstein's projects still have a bit of that fuzzy-edged, put-a-kangaroo-in-your-pocket feel. She tells war stories about her fellow mole-rat obsessives?people who schlep around the country, trading colonies for zoos, labs, and private homes. After picking up a batch in Arizona, her flight home was canceled, so she released the mole rats into the bathtub of an airport motel. The next morning, the cages were tucked under her legs like carry-on luggage and covered over with the financial section of the New York Times.

'Mirror Mirror' Trailer: Five Key Elements

Sneak peek shows us a sassy Julia Roberts, a vibrant Lily Collins and a princely Armie Hammer.
By Kara Warner

Lily Collins in "Mirror Mirror"
Photo: Relativity Media

Boy, oh, boy, has this been a great couple of weeks for trailer debuts! First, Kristen Stewart kicked some butt in her "Snow White and the Huntsman" clip, then we finally saw Katniss, Gale and Peeta preparing for battle in "The Hunger Games," and now we get our first look at Tarsem's take on Snow White, "Mirror Mirror."

Even better, now that we have seen both trailers for the two upcoming Snow White-themed flicks, it is much easier to tell them apart, as "Huntsman" is clearly more of an action/drama, while "Mirror" is action/comedy. Here's a look at five key elements that make "Mirror Mirror" worth some extra reflection:

A Comedic Twist on an Old Tale
A dramatic and dry story, this is not. From the moment the trailer begins, there is an air of whimsy and fantasy and a slew of snarky one-liners from Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen, like when she contests the color of Snow White's hair — "It's not black, it's raven" — and quipping that she's white as snow because "she's 18. Her skin has never seen the sun, of course it's good." Another deviation from the familiar tale is that this Evil Queen is broke and therefore much more concerned with trying to marry a much younger, wealthier prince than obsessing too much over her beautiful adversary.

A New Side of Julia Roberts
She has always been our favorite "Pretty Woman," with an all-American appeal and almost royal status in Hollywood. However, it's been awhile since Roberts has done a film with such mainstream appeal. (No, "Eat Pray Love" doesn't count.) Not only that, she's playing the bad guy, er, lady, and from what we can see in the trailer, she tackled her character's sassy nuances with considerable aplomb. And did we mention that she looks absolutely stunning while doing it? Because she does.

The Visuals
Speaking of stunning, the film's production design, costumes, effects, etc., make it look like we'll be transported to the most gorgeous, fantastic fairy-tale land of all time. And the costumes! Lordy, are they magnificent. Where the look of Kristen Stewart's Snow White seems cool, fierce and serious, Lily Collins is sweet, feminine and vibrant. There's even a little nod to the famous Disney princess' blue and yellow dress in there. Roberts' wardrobe is just breathtaking — literally; there's a scene in which she has a team of people trying to squeeze her into a corset.

A Perfect Prince Charming
True to his word awhile back that the MPAA might have to change the film's rating due to its dreamy factor, Armie Hammer's Prince Andrew Alcott is one charming, handsome man. Except for the scene in which the Evil Queen puts a puppy-love spell on him and he momentarily turns into an overexcited, slobbering mess. That is forgotten soon enough when we get a few glimpses of Hammer sans shirt. Also, Hammer just has a royal air and stature to him (pun intended — he's a tall man), which makes possibly cheesy lines like "I think Snow White is the most beautiful woman in the whole world" believable, not exaggerated.

Tarsem
The man is a wonderfully vivid and creative storyteller. As demonstrated in his previous films like "The Cell," "The Fall" and his most recent box-office hit "Immortals," Tarsem's enthusiastic direction produces movies that are big, bright and bold. You are guaranteed to be entertained by his work in some way, shape or form. Plus, he admitted he cast Lily Collins because he loved her eyebrows.

Analysis: Penn State shouldn't hide behind legal moves - lawyer (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? The lawyer who took on the Roman Catholic Church in Boston in a sex abuse case has some advice for Penn State University: embrace the victims and tell the whole truth, promptly.

Most legal experts agree that Penn State is likely to face civil lawsuits from alleged victims in the child sex abuse scandal that ousted the university's president and legendary football coach Joe Paterno. The size of Penn State's legal headaches and the damage to its reputation will depend on how the university reacts, according to lawyer Roderick MacLeish.

The university first should disclose any facts relevant to the case, he said.

"It's much better if the facts come from the source," MacLeish said. "They're going to come out. It will give them credibility."

Penn State should also offer unconditional mental health treatment to the alleged victims and set up a private victims' compensation fund, sparing potential plaintiffs the "horrors of litigation," he added.

MacLeish, who has no connection to the Penn State case, was the lead lawyer in a clergy abuse case against the Archdiocese of Boston that settled in 2003. The church's combative legal stance ultimately backfired, MacLeish said.

In spite of overwhelming evidence that the defendants had covered up decades of child sexual abuse, the church fought for two years. The lawsuit ended with the archdiocese agreeing to settle with around 550 abuse victims for $85 million.

In situations where the facts only get worse, it's better to release them openly and promptly, said MacLeish.

MacLeish said he has worked with other schools in the position of Penn State. When those schools have "stepped up" to help victims, they often seen an increase in their donations.

"If Penn State wants to listen to their insurance defense lawyers, this is going to go on for a long time and it's not going to end in a good way," he said.

In an email, Penn State spokeswoman Lisa Powers said she could not speculate on the potential impact of any litigation.

LAWSUITS MAY BE INEVITABLE

No matter how the university reacts, lawsuits may be inevitable.

The most likely claims against the university would be for negligence, said legal experts. In outlining charges against former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, accused of sexually abusing eight boys, a grand jury found that several university officials had reason to suspect the abuse, but didn't report it to authorities.

Two of them -- Athletic Director Tim Curley and finance official Gary Schultz -- were charged with failing to report a 2002 incident described by a graduate assistant who said he told them he saw Sandusky sexually assaulting a young boy in Penn State's football building. They have denied the charges.

Penn State spokesman Bill Mahon told The Patriot-News the school's insurance is paying the legal fees of Curley and Schultz because the charges relate to their jobs at the school. Such an arrangement is typical and likely won't affect the university's liability, legal experts say.

The case against the school could turn on the inaction by individuals, say some lawyers who have handled similar cases.

"By not reporting it, you could argue they enabled a predator to continue to abuse kids," said Jeff Herman, a Miami attorney who said he has received inquiries from Sandusky's alleged victims about potential lawsuits.

Herman last week won a $100 million verdict in Florida state court for a client who accused a retired Roman Catholic priest of sexually abusing boys over decades.

In addition to the university, Herman said he is also weighing lawsuits against some of the individuals who may have known about Sandusky but didn't report it to authorities, including Curley, Schultz, and Paterno.

MacLeish said the university and the individual defendants could raise technical defenses to those claims, arguing perhaps that they didn't have any duty to the children.

"That may be a winning legal argument but they shouldn't do it," he said.

Penn State could also seek refuge in a Pennsylvania state law that shields universities that receive state funding from certain kinds of litigation.

That defense would be "legally weak and politically dangerous," said Max Kennerly, a Philadelphia trial lawyer who has written about the case on his blog, Litigation & Trial.

If claims by the victims survive scrutiny by courts, there would be enormous pressure on Penn State to settle, said Victor Vieth, director of the National Child Protection Training Center. Most defendants don't want to risk going to trial where the ugly accusations will be aired.

"Jurors are your average person," said Vieth. "They tend to react with emotion and put themselves in the position of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit."

Sidestepping controversy, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., declined to take sides Monday on a proposal for higher tax revenues backed by fellow Republicans on Congress' supercommittee, yet expressed confidence the panel would agree on a deficit-reduction plan of at least $1.2 trillion by a Nov. 23 deadline.

A proposal for $300 billion in higher taxes has stirred grumbling within the ranks of congressional Republicans, for whom opposition to such measures has been political bedrock for more than two decades.

Two of the party's presidential hopefuls said Monday they wouldn't support any committee deficit-reduction plan that includes higher taxes.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, campaigning in Iowa, said he would "do everything in my power to defeat" any such proposal.

A spokesman for Rick Perry said the Texas governor "wants to look at details but if those details include a tax increase he's not going to be for it. He does not favor higher taxes," added David Miner.

Additionally, officials said that Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., who outlined the plan last week in a closed-door meeting of four Republicans and three Democrats, has encountered criticism from fellow conservatives despite strong credentials as an opponent of higher taxes. "There's been a little bit, but it's been pretty muted," his spokeswoman, Nachama Soloveichik, said of the response.

Cantor's spokeswoman turned aside several emailed requests for the majority leader's views on the proposal. She said he hadn't seen the plan, and she referred to his comments at a news conference earlier in the day when he told reporters, "I'm not going to be opining as to any reports, hypotheticals or anything connected with their work."

Despite that pledge, Cantor was bullish in predicting agreement before the deadline and adding that a fallback requirement to cut $1.2 trillion from domestic and defense programs wouldn't be triggered.

The committee has been at work for two months, hoping to succeed at a task that has defied the best efforts of high-ranking political leaders past and present.

Despite intense talks late last week, there has been little indication of progress as age-old political divisions have re-emerged.

The principal stumbling blocks revolve around taxes on the one hand, and the large federal programs of Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security on the other.

Democrats are unwilling to agree to cuts in benefit programs unless Republicans will accept higher taxes, particularly on the highest-income individuals and families.

Republicans counter that out-of-control spending largely accounts for the government's enormous budget deficits, and they say raising taxes will only complicate efforts to help the economy recover from the worst recession in more than seven decades.

At the same time, each side is grappling with the possible political consequences of the committee's work, with an eye on the 2012 campaign for control of the White House and Congress.

Liberal Democrats are highly reluctant to agree to curbs on programs the party has long been identified with, and last week members on the supercommittee jettisoned an earlier proposal to slow the rise in cost-of-living benefits for Social Security recipients.

The same goes for conservatives, many of whom fear the possible political cost of changing their positions in order to pursue a less-than-certain bipartisan compromise on deficit reduction.

Many GOP office holders have signed a pledge circulated by Americans for Tax Reform not to vote for higher taxes. The organization is led by Grover Norquist, a conservative activist, although in comments to reporters Cantor suggested that influence by an outsider isn't the dominant concern.

"It's not about Grover Norquist. It's about commitments that people made to the electorate they represent, the people that sent them here. That's what it's about," he said.

Republicans on the committee hailed Toomey's proposal last week as a breakthrough and a concession that could open the way to a deal.

But Democrats were dismissive, saying it amounted to a tax cut in disguise for the wealthy ? the very taxpayers that they and Obama say should pay more. According to numerous officials, Toomey's proposal envisioned an additional $250 billion in revenue emerging from a sweeping revision of the tax code that would bring the top rate down from 35 percent to 28 percent while reducing or eliminating many commonly used itemized deductions.

In an interview on Sunday, Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, co-chairman of the supercommittee said that while Republicans believe that higher tax revenues will hurt the economy, "within the context of the bipartisan negotiation with Democrats, clearly they are a reality."

He said that whatever "damage would be done by $250 billion of new taxes we think would be offset by a system that would help create jobs. And as we're dealing with the debt crisis, we don't want to make the jobs crisis even worse. So that's what has been put on the table."

Jordan, R-Ohio, posted his dissent hours later in USA Today, although he refrained from criticizing any Republican directly.

"Balance doesn't mean `half-right, half-wrong,' he wrote, referring to Obama's calls for a deficit-cutting plan that includes higher taxes and spending cuts. "It means you don't fall over." Jordan is chairman of the Republican Study Committee, an organization of conservative GOP members of the House.

La Commedia è Finita!

???Into the vacuum stepped Silvio Berlusconi. Though it's hard to believe now, at the time he seemed revolutionary, too. He talked about releasing Italians from the chains of bureaucracy, corruption and high taxes. He brought a whole new group of young? people into politics, all dressed in cashmere sweaters. He named his political party Forza Italia?after the slogan of the national soccer team?and for a brief moment, that seemed fun. For an even briefer moment politics became chic, even among the northern Italian middle classes, who had always stayed away. In Milan, I was told in 1993, it was actually rude to ask a man which party he voted for, much worse than asking him how much money he made. Berlusconi was supposed to change all of that. ?

Samsung Conquer 4G review

Samsung Conquer 4G

Samsung's got a lot going for them these days. They're shipping mad numbers of devices, making phones for different price points and consumers, and shoot, they even got build the coveted Galaxy Nexus.

The phone in question right now is the Conquer 4G, a not-quite-midrange, not-quite-high-end phone that's out on Sprint. I find it (personally) a little hard to classify because some of the hardware screams budget phone and some of it doesn't.

So where does it stand in the heiarchy of smartphones? Is it far outside the über-friends club of "superphones," relegated to eating lunch in the bathroom? Or is it second string on the JV basketball team, still fairly strong, but lacking in a few departments? We aim to cover all that (and more), so join us after the break for the full Conquer 4G review.

The Good

It's small, relatively thin, and incredibly light. It's got 4G (for when you're in a service area), and it's also running a near-vanilla version of Android.

The Bad

The screen isn't as sharp as some of the higher-end displays. It's also carrying a single-core 1GHz processor, so the bleeding edge won't be impressed. Cameras leave a bit to be desired.

Conclusion

Yet another phone built to appeal to the smartphone shopper on a budget, the Conquer 4G does most of what it's tasked to do well. It's not priced competitively, though, as there's far better phones available at the same price.
