Woods just ordinary, still up by 7 at Bridgestone

AKRON, Ohio (AP) ? With an elite field chasing the lead, Tiger Woods decided to play keep-away.

Already up by a staggering seven shots through 36 holes thanks to a career-tying best of 61 in the second round, Woods shot a solid 2-under 68 on Saturday in the Bridgestone Invitational to maintain that same seven-stroke lead.

It was as if he was turning around and daring the world's best players to come after him. No one really could.

"You know, today was a day that I didn't quite have it," said Woods, who was at 15-under 195. "But I scored. And that's the name of the game, posting a number, and I did today. I grinded my way around that golf course."

Now he's only 18 holes away from making even more history in a career of historic accomplishments. He'll be competing against the record book as much as the elite field.

"It's kind of tough to pick up seven or eight shots on Tiger around here," said Henrik Stenson, a distant second after a 67. "It would take something spectacular on my behalf or any of the other guys around me, and obviously a very, very poor round for him."

Woods, by the way, is 41-2 when leading after 54 holes in a PGA Tour event.

A victory would be his eighth at Firestone Country Club and in the Bridgestone and its forerunner, the NEC Invitational. That would match the tour-record eight he already has at Bay Hill and the eight wins Sam Snead had at the Greater Greensboro Open.

Woods also could capture his 79th victory on the PGA Tour, drawing him within three of Snead's record of 82.

"I'll just go out there and execute my game plan," he said. "It all starts with what the weather is doing, and then I build it from there. We'll see what I do tomorrow."

Unlike in a second-round 61 that could easily have been a 59 or even lower, Woods didn't recover from all of his errant shots. He bogeyed the ninth, 14th and 16th holes, failing to bounce back from wayward shots.

Yet he still was good enough to put himself in position for yet another lopsided victory, one that will likely mark him as the player to beat next week in the PGA Championship at Oak Hill.

"Any time you can go into a major tournament or any tournament with a win under your belt, it's nice," Woods said. "It validates what you're working on and you have some nice momentum going in there."

Of course, Woods has failed to win his last 17 major championships. No longer is it a lock that, with 14, he'll surpass the mark of 18 by Jack Nicklaus.

Woods began the third round with a seven-shot lead after rounds of 66 and the career-best 61 ? the fourth time he has gone that low, also matching the tournament record originally set by Jose Maria Olazabal in 1990.

Jason Dufner was third, eight strokes back after a 67, and Luke Donald (68), Bill Haas (69) and Chris Wood (70) followed at 6 under.

Dufner said Firestone isn't all that unique because it is just one of a number of places where Woods dominates.

"Yeah, he has a pretty good track record here," he said. "There's quite a few events out here that he does really well. Torrey Pines comes to mind, Bay Hill comes to mind, the Memorial. So he obviously feels comfortable on those courses, and it's our job to try and chase him down if we can."

Defending champ Keegan Bradley, with a 71, was another shot back along with Miguel Angel Jimenez, who put up a 65. Rounding out the top 10 were 2011 Bridgestone winner and reigning Masters champ Adam Scott and Zach Johnson.

Woods has overwhelmed everyone in a glittering field that includes 48 of the top 50 players in the world ranking.

Much like he did a day earlier, Woods started out fast. He birdied the first two holes (he had also eagled No. 2 in the second round). He rolled in a 12-footer at No. 1 and then two-putted from 40 feet at No. 2, most likely causing the rest of the players to just shake their heads.

From there, however, he proved merely human. He parred the next six holes and then drove into the sheer face of a fairway bunker and took a bogey at the ninth hole.

He played the back nine 1-under par ? including yet another shot for the highlight reel.

At the par-4 13th, he airmailed his iron shot over the green and into heavy, grabby rough. But he got a sand wedge under the ball, popping it straight up. It landed on the green and rolled right to the pin, clanging off it and into the hole for birdie from 40 feet away.

"Certainly, it wasn't a shot I was trying to make. I was just trying to get it down there where I could get a par and get out of Dodge and dodge a bullet," he said. "It just happened to go in."

Of course, the ball often happens to just go in for Woods at World Golf Championship events like the Bridgestone.

He has won 17 times in 41 starts ? a success rate of 41 percent ? while finishing in the top 10 an amazing 32 times in WGC events.

At Firestone, he's had winning streaks of four (2005-09) and three (1999-2001), and also has a tie for second and two fourth-place finishes.

Woods looked back on his round and gave it a thumbs-up.

"It ended up being a dead push for the day," he said about hanging on to the same lead he began the day with. "That's not too bad, either."

Not too bad at all.

Tiny Wandering Spider Discovered in Laos

Scientists have discovered a new spider species in Laos, in Southeast Asia.

The spider, dubbed Ctenus monaghani, was discovered crawling across a researchers path while he was filming a nature documentary called "Wild Things."

The unobtrusive little creature measures just 0.4 inches (1 centimeter) across and is part of a genus of wandering spiders, meaning it catches prey without weaving a web. Instead, wandering spiders typically prowl the jungle floors at night, pounce on unsuspecting prey and deliver a deadly sting.

Southeast Asia is teeming with biodiversity. Scientists have discovered several endangered frog species in Laos in recent years. Southeast Asia is also home to several endangered lizard species, such as the Komodo dragon.

Peter J?ger, an arachnologist at the Senckenberg Research Institute in Frankfurt, Germany, was filming "Wild Things" when he noticed the little spider scurry across his path.

J?ger decided to name the species after Dominic Monaghan, an actor in the movie.

This isn't the only spider that J?ger has discovered while filming his documentary. In 2012, the researcher found the daddy of all daddy longlegs, an arachnid with 13-inch-long (33 centimeters) leg span was found lurking in caves in the country as well. The longest daddy longlegs every found had a leg span of 13.4 inches (34 cm).

And there are likely many more undiscovered spider species in Laos. Scientists estimate that about half of all species haven't been described yet.

New 60,000 Star Online Data Set May Help Reveal Formation of Milky Way Galaxy

This map shows an infrared view of the Milky Way, as seen from Earth, plus the infrared spectra of two stars. Green circles show locations where infrared spectroscopy data were obtained during the first year of Sloan Digital Sky Survey-III observations with the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE). The white boxes show the infrared spectra of two stars as seen by APOGEE; the red lines show where these stars live in the galaxy. One of these stars is in the galactic bulge, which is rich in elements heavier than hydrogen, and one is further out in the galactic disk, which has fewer such heavy elements. Image: Peter Frinchaboy (Texas Christian University), Ricardo Schiavon (Liverpool John Moores University), and the SDSS-III collaboration. Infrared sky image from 2MASS, IPAC/Caltech and University of Massachusetts.

"This data set is unprecedented for investigating the history and structure of our galaxy, as well as nearby low-mass stars," said Penn State assistant professor of astronomy and astrophysics Suvrath Mahadevan, one of the SDSS-III scientists.

The highlight is a new set of high-resolution measurements of the amount of infrared light given off by each star at each wavelength. The scientists used infrared light, which is invisible to human eyes, because this light is able to penetrate the veil of dust that obscures the center of the galaxy. This light-blocking barrier limited the ability of previous studies to consistently reveal information about the stars in the Milky Way that were hidden behind the dust.

The new infrared detections are made possible by a new SDSS-III instrument that is part of an effort to create a comprehensive census of our Milky Way galaxy -- the SDSS-III's Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE). The new spectra are the first data to be released by the APOGEE project. "The APOGEE instrument was designed for observing the infrared light from these hidden stars in our Galaxy," Mahadevan said. "This innovative instrument can obtain spectra of 300 stars in a single observation. Our goal is to obtain detailed information on approximately 100,000 stars during the three-year span of the APOGEE survey."

The question of how our Milky Way galaxy formed has been the subject of scientific speculation and debate for centuries. APOGEE's three-dimensional map will provide key information for resolving central questions about how our galaxy formed over the many billions of years of its history. The key is learning the compositions and motions of stars in each region of the galaxy. Mahadevan has led efforts to characterize low-mass stars and binary stars found during the APOGEE experiment.

The SDSS-III team also is publishing another 685,000 spectra from galaxies and quasars whose light began traveling toward Earth when our universe was much younger, just as the mysterious force of "dark energy" was beginning to influence the universe's expansion. These observations come from the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). "The BOSS project is producing superb data that allow numerous investigations ranging from the large scale evolutionary history of the universe to the properties of supermassive black holes, which have the size of the solar system," said distinguished professor of astronomy and astrophysics Niel Brandt, another Penn State scientist involved with SDSS-III.

Donald Schneider, distinguished professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State, is the survey coordinator and scientific publication coordinator for SDSS-III. Public access to SDSS data always has been a key goal of the project. All data are available, to researchers and the public, at http://www.sdss3.org/dr10 . Tepid jobs news barely dents stock market advance

NEW YORK (AP) -- A tepid jobs report Friday barely dented a summer rally on the stock market.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index ended the week 1 percent higher after breaking through 1,700 points for the first time Thursday. The index has risen for five of the last six weeks. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.6 percent and is on a streak of six weekly gains.

On Friday, indexes dropped in early trading after the U.S. added fewer jobs than forecast in July, curbing optimism that the economy is poised to pick up strength in the second half of the year. The market gradually recovered throughout the day and major indexes ended slightly higher. The gains were enough to set all-time highs for the Dow and S&P.

The government reported that 162,000 jobs were created last month, pushing the unemployment rate down to a 4?-year low of 7.4 percent. The number of jobs added was the lowest since March and below the 183,000 economists polled by FactSet were expecting.

Brad Sorensen, Charles Schwab's director of market and sector research, said the jobs report was "moderately disappointing."

"That tepid growth we've seen, (the economy) not being able to reach escape velocity, continues to be the story," Sorenson said.

Investors have been watching economic reports closely and trying to anticipate when the Federal Reserve will start easing back on its economic stimulus. The central bank is buying $85 billion in bonds every month to keep long-term interest rates low and encourage borrowing.

While the jobs report wasn't encouraging, it did make it more likely that the Fed would take its time cutting back on stimulus, said Doug Lockwood of Hefty Wealth Partners. The stimulus from the central bank has been an important factor powering a four-year bull run in stocks.

"As long as there's this concept that the Fed may still need to be involved and stimulate, that's good for both the bond and the stock market," said Lockwood. "You're seeing the trampoline effect; the market drops and then comes back up."

The S&P 500 ended Friday up 2.80 points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,709.67. The index is up 5 percent since the start of July. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 30.34 points, or 0.2 percent, to 15,658.36.

Seven of the 10 industry sectors that make up the S&P 500 gained, led by consumer discretionary stocks. Of the three groups that fell, energy stocks dropped the most.

Investors were also assessing company earnings.

Chevron fell after it became the latest big energy company to disappoint investors with lower earnings. Chevron's profit fell 26 percent to $5.4 billion due to lower oil prices and maintenance work at refineries. The stock fell $1.49, or 1.2 percent, to $124.95.

LinkedIn surged $23.58, or 10.6 percent, to $235.58 after the professional networking company's results topped analysts' estimates. LinkedIn had its biggest quarterly membership gain since going public in May 2011.

In other trading, the Nasdaq composite rose 13.84 points, or 0.4 percent, to 3,689.59.

The technology-heavy index got a boost from PC maker Dell, which gained 72 cents, or 5.6 percent, to $13.68 after a special committee of the company's board agreed to an increased offer from founder Michael Dell. The deal would add a special dividend for shareholders.

Government bonds rose after the weak employment report. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which falls when the note's price increases, fell to 2.60 percent from 2.71 percent Thursday. Bonds were regaining some lost ground after a sell-off Thursday prompted by a string of promising economic reports.

Investors will have to live with increasing volatility in the bond market in coming months as the Federal Reserve begins to wind down its stimulus program, said Ron Florance, managing director of investment strategy for Wells Fargo Private Bank.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note is 1 percentage point higher than it was May 3, when it hit a low for the year of 1.63 percent.

Investors "are used to having stability in their bonds and volatility in their stocks," Florance said. "In the next 18 months it could be exactly the opposite, with stability in the stock market and volatility in the bond market."

The S&P 500 is up 19.9 percent this year, and has gained nine out of the last 10 months.

In commodities trading, the price of oil fell 95 cents, or 0.9 percent, to $106.94 a barrel. Gold fell 70 cents, or 0.1 percent, to $1,310.50 an ounce.

The dollar fell against the euro and the Japanese yen.

Among other stocks making big moves:

? Viacom surged $4.81, or 6.5 percent, to $79.17 after the media company said its income rose 20 percent in the latest quarter, boosted by affiliate fee revenue its cable TV channels and higher advertising revenue. Viacom also increased its stock buyback program to $20 billion from $10 billion.

? American International Group, the insurer the government bailed out during the financial crisis, rose $1.26, or 1.3 percent, to $48.33 after the company said late Thursday that its profit grew 17 percent in the second quarter. AIG also announced its first dividend since 2008 and said its board had approved a $1 billion stock buyback plan.

? Weight Watchers International plunged $9.04, or 19 percent, to $37.99 after the company reported late Thursday that its second-quarter net income fell 16 percent. The company also named a new CEO and said recruitment trends are weak.

Stephen Harper says pipelines ?safest way you can go? when transporting oil

OTTAWA ? Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Friday that while he thinks new pipeline projects are a good idea in principle, individual proposals will undergo ?rigorous? review.

Why Canada can, and must, pull off nation-building Energy East pipeline

Claudia Cattaneo: TransCanada?s $12-billion pipeline would truly make the country oil rich, while ensuring the best environmental protection that can be had. Keep reading.

?I think the reality of anybody who looks at the business (is) that the absolute safest way to transport energy products is through pipelines. That?s the safest way you can go,? the prime minister told a news conference in Quebec City. He was responding to concerns about a new east-west pipeline proposal announced earlier this week.

The prime minister said he thinks such pipeline projects are a good idea in principle, because they benefit regions across Canada and enhance the country?s energy security. But he said they are subject to ?rigorous independent analysis.?

?In terms of addressing specific concerns, there is a process that will do that, and the government will ensure that all recommendations from that process are followed,? he said.

Harper?s remarks came a day after Calgary-based TransCanada said it plans to move ahead with its Energy East pipeline project. The project will expand an existing pipeline network to enter Quebec and end in New Brunswick.

The comments also come at a time of heightened sensitivity about the transportation of crude oil after the Lac-Megantic disaster, in which an unmanned runaway train carrying crude oil exploded and devastated the eastern Quebec town.

For new energy projects, Harper said the government acts on the independent evaluations that look at environmental and economic effects, ?particularly on independent scientific evaluations.?

?But obviously we think it is a good idea in principle in terms of selling our energy products,? he said. ?We have massive energy resources in this country. ? It?s important that Canadians all across the country benefit, and it?s important that we enhance our own energy security.?

Harper was also asked to respond to criticisms of the contentious proposed Keystone XL pipeline?s job creation potential.

Earlier this week, U.S. President Barack Obama again waded into the heated Keystone debate, saying the proposed pipeline that would carry crude oil from Canada?s oil sands to the U.S. Gulf Coast is ?not a jobs plan? and would only create about 2,000 construction jobs.

On Friday, Harper responded by saying his government?s top priority is job creation, and its perspective on Keystone is ?very well known by everyone in Washington.?

?Clearly this is a project that will create jobs on both sides of the border,? Harper said. ?It is, in our judgment, an important project not just for our economy and for job creation, but for the long-term energy security of North America.?

TransCanada?s east-west pipeline proposal, which would move more than a million barrels of crude oil per day to refineries in New Brunswick, has the enthusiastic support of the premiers of Alberta Premier Alison Redford and New Brunswick Premier David Alward.

?This is truly a nation-building project that will diversify our economy and create new jobs here in Alberta and across the country,? Redford said in a statement on Thursday. Alward called the project a ?game changer.?

But Quebec Premier Pauline Marois has been non-committal. She said last week her province would study the proposal when TransCanada releases more details.

The project also still needs to clear numerous regulatory hurdles, with TransCanada?s announcement Thursday meaning the company is pushing ahead with formal applications for approval.

Harper was in Quebec City with Heritage Minister Shelly Glover, new Quebec lieutenant Denis Lebel and Quebec City Mayor R?gis Labeaume to announce that the city?s Gilmour Hill, near the Plains of Abraham, will now be open to traffic year-round instead of closing for the winter months.

Sentencing set in Cleveland kidnap-rape case

CLEVELAND (AP) ? Three months after an Ohio woman kicked out part of a door to end nearly a decade of captivity, a onetime school bus driver faces sentencing for kidnapping three women and subjecting them to years of sexual and physical abuse.

Prosecutors are expected to detail Ariel Castro's daily assaults on the women, recounted in diaries that compared the women's experience to that of prisoners of war. With the possibility of the death penalty for a forced miscarriage taken off the table, Castro stands to get life in prison plus 1,000 years on Thursday.

Cuyahoga County prosecutor Tim McGinty said in a sentencing memorandum filed Wednesday that Castro, who chained his captives and fed them only one meal a day, "admits his disgusting and inhuman conduct" but "remains remorseless for his actions."

The memorandum says many of the specific charges in Castro's indictment reflect conduct documented by one of the women in her diary.

"The entries speak of forced sexual conduct, of being locked in a dark room, of anticipating the next session of abuse, of the dreams of someday escaping and being reunited with family, of being chained to a wall, of being held like a prisoner of war ... of being treated like an animal," it says.

The sentencing could take up to four hours, court officials said, with Castro, his attorneys, his victims and prosecutors getting a chance to speak. The legal team representing the women's interests declined to comment in advance on whether they would testify or send statements to the court.

In the court filing, McGinty offered new details of Castro's treatment of the women, who he said were kept "in a state of powerlessness" through physical, sexual and psychological violence.

"He made them believe that their physical survival depended on him, and he threatened to end their lives if they did not comply with his every demand," McGinty said.

Castro lured one of the women into his Cleveland home with the promise of a puppy for her son and tricked another by saying she could see his daughter, said McGinty.

He chained his captives by their ankles, fed them only one meal a day and provided plastic toilets in their bedrooms which were infrequently emptied, the filing said.

He menaced them with a gun, threatened them with tales of other captives, some of whom hadn't made it home, and at one point locked all of them in a vehicle in his garage for three days while he had a visitor.

Castro claimed he didn't have an exit strategy from his complicated double life and finally gave the women a chance to escape by leaving a door unlocked, the court filing said.

The women, each kidnapped separately when they accepted a ride from Castro on Cleveland's blue-collar west side, quickly escaped after Amanda Berry kicked out the door panel May 6 and Castro was arrested within hours. The women disappeared separately between 2002 and 2004, when they were 14, 16 and 20 years old.

There was no comment from Castro's defense team on the eve of sentencing.

Other horrific details of the women's ordeal had already emerged, including tales of being chained to poles in the basement or a bedroom heater or inside a van, with one woman forced to wear a motorcycle helmet while chained in the basement and, after she tried to escape, having a vacuum cord wrapped around her neck.

Castro repeatedly starved and beat one of the victims each time she was pregnant, forcing her to miscarry five times.

He forced the same woman on threat of death to safely deliver the child he fathered with another victim on Christmas Day 2006. The same day, prosecutors say, Castro raped the woman who helped deliver his daughter.

Prosecutors will ask the judge to prohibit Castro from ever seeing his daughter, now 6.

McGinty says experts will also discuss how Castro was able to keep the women captive for so long.

Berry, 27, made a surprise onstage appearance at a rap concert last weekend, and a second victim, Gina DeJesus, 23, made a few televised comments as a privacy fence was being erected around her house. The third victim, Michelle Knight, 32, appeared with Berry and DeJesus in a video in early July thanking the community for its support.

A former Goldman Sachs trader who earned the nickname "Fabulous Fab" was found liable Thursday in a fraud case brought by federal regulators in response to the 2007 mortgage crisis that helped push the country into recession.?

A jury reached the verdict at the civil trial in Manhattan federal court of Fabrice Tourre ? a French-born Stanford graduate described by Securities and Exchange Commission lawyers as the face of "Wall Street greed." Tourre's attorneys portrayed him as a scapegoat in a downturn caused by larger economic forces.?

Tourre, 34, found liable in six of seven SEC fraud claims. He faces potential fines and a possible ban from the financial industry. The exact punishment will be determined at a future proceeding.?

The SEC had accused Tourre of misleading institutional investors about subprime mortgage securities that he knew were doomed to fail, setting the stage for a valued Goldman hedge fund client, Paulson & Co. Inc., to secretly bet against the investment.?

The maneuver ended up making $1 billion for the hedge fund and its wealthy president, John A. Paulson, and millions of dollars in fees for Goldman. The SEC also sought to show that it helped earn Tourre a bonus that boosted his salary to $1.7 million in 2007.?

On the witness stand, the SEC lawyers confronted Tourre with a January 2007 email it said deliberately misled another institutional investor about Paulson's short position in the investment called Abacus 2007-AC1.?

Asked repeatedly if the information in the email was "false," Tourre responded, "It was not accurate."?

He added: "I wasn't trying to confuse anybody; it just wasn't accurate at the time."?

SEC lawyer Matthew Martens said, "We're obviously gratified by the jury's verdict and appreciate their hard work." There was no immediate response from the defense.?

In closing arguments, Martens called Tourre's testimony "surreal, imaginary, unreal, dreamlike" and told jurors that the defendant wanted them "to live in his imaginary land ... to live in a fantasy world."?

"Only if you close your eyes to the facts, you can find Mr. Tourre not liable for his actions," the SEC lawyer said.?

Tourre's attorney, John Coffey, countered that the government had "unjustly accused him of wrongdoing."?

Coffey urged jurors to put the investment's failure in perspective, noting that all similarly packaged securities "went off the cliff as well" after 2007.?

The civil case had been called the most significant legal action related to the mortgage securities meltdown, but it lacked the drama and high stakes of white-collar criminal cases. Much of the testimony was devoted to the intricacies of synthetic collateralized debt obligations, or CDOs ? a complex type of investment central to the case.?

Some of the testimony focused on a personal email Tourre sent to his girlfriend in France. The SEC lawyers said the missive proved the hubris of a man at the center of a massive fraud, while the defense claimed was "an old-fashioned love letter" penned by a young trader who was full of self-doubt and angst over upheaval in the financial world.?

Writing in French, Tourre said of the financial markets: "The whole building is about to collapse anytime now."?

"Only potential survivor, the fabulous Fab ... Standing in the middle of all these complex, highly leveraged, exotic trades he created without necessarily understanding all of the implications of those monstrosities!!!"?

Pressed by Marten on what he meant, Tourre said, "I didn't create any monstrosities."?

Goldman settled with the SEC in 2010 by paying a $550 million fine without admitting or denying wrongdoing. Tourre left the firm in 2012.?

Beyond chemo: How a Portland company is advancing cancer treatment

Portland-based MolecularMD announced Monday it obtained a license to commercialize a diagnostic technology that will lead to a more targeted treatment for a type of lung cancer.

MolecularMD entered into a license agreement granting it exclusive patent rights to the diagnostic technology. The diagnostic test becomes more powerful when a drug is tied to it, which is in the process of happening, said Greg Cox, MolecularMD?s director of licensing.

About 235,000 lung cancer cases are diagnosed annually and a subtype of a subtype is ?squamous cell cancer,? which affects 50,000 people, Cox said. A gene marker has been identified that can be targeted and provide an avenue for treatment other than chemotherapy. Targeted drugs are already available for other kinds of cancer, and several candidates could work for this one.

?It opens the door for a new kind of hope for those patients,? Cox said. ?Patients have had no alternative other than chemo.?

MolecularMD is developing the diagnostic test and will work with a pharmaceutical partner and perform a clinical trial. Patients will be tested for the gene mutation with MolecularMD?s diagnostic test and if they have it, they can go onto the drug the pharmaceutical company is developing.

MolecularMD develops and commercializes specialty molecular diagnostics for oncology applications. It works with pharmaceutical companies running clinical trials examining the efficacy of new drugs and serves as the middle man between the inventor, usually a university, and the pharmaceutical company that designs the drug.

MolecularMD is a spin off of Oregon Health & Science University, which has a financial stake in the company. It also has a license for a pill technology that could help leukemia patients whose disease symptoms don?t respond to other available drugs.

Cyclospora outbreak hits 24 cases in Florida

As the cyclospora outbreak reached 372 cases in 16 states, Florida's Department of Health has confirmed the 24th case in the Sunshine State. One of those two dozen patients has been hospitalized with the intestinal infection.

The state is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other federal agencies to investigate cases of cyclospora nationwide in an effort to identify the infection's source.

Caused by a single-celled parasite that attacks the small intestine, cyclospora usually causes diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, gas, nausea and fatigue. Vomiting, body aches, headache, fever and other flu-like symptoms may also occur, health officials said.

Cyclospora cannot be passed directly from one person to another. It is most commonly spread by ingesting water or uncooked food contaminated with human feces. Cyclospora infections are usually linked to herbs, vegetables and berries.

The outbreak began in Florida in early June. Currently, 14 women and 10 men have been reported to have the infection. Their average age is 57.5 years, with a range of 22 to 78 years of age.

Unlike in other states, the 24 cases in Florida share no common links to restaurants or foods.

Iowa, where the outbreak originated, now has 143 cases. The second-highest number of cases is in Texas, which has reported 101 cases, according to the CDC. Nationwide at least 21 residents have been hospitalized as a result of the infection.

Because symptoms can last several weeks if left untreated, see your health provider if you experience symptoms.

The last significant cyclospora outbreak in Florida was 8 years ago, and was linked to contaminated basil, health officials said.
