COMMENTARY | Until the GOP debate in Florida last month, I couldn't have told you which Republican candidate I supported. I couldn't have named more than three of the front-runners and wasn't particularly enamored of any of them ? until I heard Herman Cain speak.
Suddenly, he was on my radar, and in the sights of the rest of the Republican candidates and the Democrats. The man has a kick me sign attached to his shirt by everyone who wants to make sure he's down before his campaign can dig in and get organized.
Here's what needs to happen for Cain to become the GOP candidate and possibly even win the election.
Get real with the 9-9-9 plan
Nobody likes it and not simply because it's a threat to the status quo. Right now, the 9-9-9 plan is getting ripped apart by both sides of the fence and Cain's the one taking the criticism. What Cain needs to do is shelve the plan to a back-burner status and concentrate on building up his candidate credentials. Without anything else by which voters can recognize his name, he's a one-trick pony and once the plan becomes demonized, even by association, so does his appeal as a candidate. He's on the right track by addressing critics head-on, but his plan should not be the major thrust of his campaign.
Keep clear of the playground fights
Tuesday night's debate in Las Vegas was an ugly thing; Democrats can simply sit back and let the GOP front-runners implode or tear each other to shreds. Even worse, the candidates are doing their homework for them, finding cracks in their armor that will later be exploited. Cain has so far conducted himself with dignity and grace -- one of the things I like about the man and something voters will remember.
Get Familiar With Foreign Policy
The reason presidents can have an informed dialogue about current events and the latest goings-on around the world is because they have top-notch advisers. It's not the president's job to be the one collecting intelligence. However, Cain must address major issues on foreign policy with fluency and clarity. Cain's business know-how isn't debatable, but his political isolation is to his discredit as a statesman.
Cain's a great contender in the upcoming primaries -- but his campaign needs to refocus their efforts on what works.
